*Diotima: Materials for the Study of Women and Gender in the Ancient World*
<http://www.uky.edu/AS/Classics/anthology.html> announces a new Translation
Editor for its on-line anthology of Greek, Latin, Egyptian, and Coptic
texts: Professor John T. Quinn of Hope College. Prof. Quinn brings to the
job great skill, energy, and interest in the art of translation; readers of
Diotima know him as the author of lively versions of some of Horace's
livelier epodes.

As Diotima's first Translation Editor, I have seen the Anthology grow over
the past five years to include much wonderful material; we have complete
translations of three Greek tragedies and the Homeric Hymn to Demeter,
selected fragments from three of Euripides' plays, a good collection of
Greek and Roman lyric poetry, short prose pieces and excerpts that provide
fascinating insight into women's lives and perceptions of women in
antiquity (including a generous selection from Fant & Lefkowitz's _Women's
Life in Greece and Rome_), and more.

Remember that Diotima is a great classroom resource; all of the materials
in the Anthology can be used for free. You can use Diotima to add readings
to a course in an impromptu way, or plan longer readings on your syllabus
without the expense of books and permission fees. The translators
appreciate hearing by e-mail when their work is assigned for classes.

If you are a translator, remember Diotima as a publication venue! The
Anthology has become a widely-used and respected resource, and publishing
in Diotima is a good way to reach a large and varied audience. Submitted
works that have not been previously published receive editorial critique
and/or peer review. Translators retain the copyright to their work.

If you have published translations that have a bearing on women and gender
in antiquity, consider re-publishing them (or parts of them) on Diotima. If
your work is in print, publishing all or some of it on Diotima can help
create a wider audience for the print publication. In these cases Diotima
can provide prominent links to your publisher's web site (see for example
_Women's Life in Greece and Rome_, excerpted with permission from Johns
Hopkins University Press, for a model).

Thanks to all who have used and supported Diotima's Anthology since 1995.
Please continue to share your ideas and your work with John T. Quinn
([log in to unmask]), and with Diotima's Editor in Chief, Ross Scaife
([log in to unmask]).

XAIPETE,

Diane Arnson Svarlien, Translation Editor 1995-2000
