Please excuse my questions. I've been shooting 16mm
for almost 10 years but have just recently decided to
take more interest in preserving these records.
16mm LEADERS ?
FPC has a somewhat confusing list of which leaders go
with which kinds of film stock. So, I thought I'd
refer to some of the opinions on this list.
I only shoot 16mm B/W, though I shoot both negative
and reversal stocks.
What leaders would I use for....
-16mm B/W negative (head, tail)
-16mm B/W reversal
-16mm prints from negative and reversal
-16mm fullcoat slug and head/tail leader
Lastly, is there a cheaper alternative to FPC that's
the same quality?

The "Universal" Head and Tail leaders were made from masters available
from the SMPTE as 35-UL and 16-UL (per standard SMPTE 55). These are the
often-seen "countdown clock" leaders depicted in movies and commercials.
Labs may have preprint leaders made from these masters available in
various film stocks and formats (e.g., triacetate/ESTAR base, color
negative, reversal, B&W, etc.):
I note that the current SMPTE Test Materials catalog lists the new 35mm
projection leader (per Standard SMPTE 301) 35-PL, as well as the
"Universal" 35-UL, but no longer lists the 16-UL master:
The labs should also be able to supply head and tail leader for prints.
As you note, a variety of print, lab, and processing leaders are available
from Kodak's subsidiary FPC:
FPC also sells magnetic film:
NT Audio is also a manufacturer of projection leaders:
I hope this information is helpful.
