                        Call for Abstracts

*Folklore Forum*, a twice-yearly, interdisciplinary journal
published by the graduate students and faculty of The Folklore Institute
at Indiana University, Bloomington, is presenting a collection of the best
work presently being done in the area of myth studies in the United States
and Canada in its Spring 1999 issue. Abstracts of 250-300 words should be
submitted to the guest editor by January 15, 1998.
Topics may include ancient, medieval, and/or modern myth(s) and
might include:
-- textual studies (ethnopoetics, content analyses, structural analysis,
etc.)
-- myth in situated use (performance studies, discourse analysis, etc)
-- socio-cultural contextual studies
-- literary treatments and genre studies
-- toward a definition of myth in technologically elaborate cultures
-- semiotic analyses
-- myth and the millennium
-- archetypal or cross-cultural studies
-- functional analyses
-- myth in film, theater, and/or television
-- gender/class/race analyses
-- comparative studies
-- emergent mythologies
-- combinations of these and other approaches
Abstracts should descibe in some detail any text(s) and
theoretical framework(s) to be enlisted in writing the paper. As we hope
to present a broad range of topics and perspectives, it should be
understood that we will select from the abstract submissions to request
quality papers that will not significantly overlap in either content or
theory.
Abstracts of original work from graduate students and faculty
members from depatments of Folklore, Classical Studies, Anthropology,
English, Comparative Literature, and Cultural Studies will be considered
and returned by March 1, 1998.
The deadline for contingently accepted papers (pending any
necessary revisions) is June 1, 1998.

Submit abstract by January 15, 1998 to the guest editor, Liz Locke, at
                Folklore Forum, Myth Issue
                504 North Fess Street
                Bloomington, IN 47408-3890

or by e-mail to [log in to unmask] Please put *Myth Issue* on the
subject line and include mention of your university and department
affiliation.

Please forward this call for abstracts to any interested parties.
