Position at Loyola University Chicago

For a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning
with the 1998-99 academic year, the Department of Classical Studies seeks a
specialist in Greek poetry (preferably epic or tragedy, but all fields in
the general category of Greek poetry will be considered). An interest in
modern critical theory and/or women in antiquity is welcome. Candidates
should be competent in both Greek and Latin and prepared to teach both
languages at all levels; they should also be able to teach undergraduate
courses in Classical Civilization and literature in translation. Clear
evidence of scholarly potential and excellence in teaching is essential.
The Ph.D. must be in hand by the time the appointment begins (August 1998).
Loyola University Chicago offers undergraduate majors in Latin, Greek, and
Classical Civilization; the M.A. in Latin and in Greek; and the Ph.D. in
Classical Studies. The department also has a significant commitment to the
undergraduate Core Curriculum and is involved in a variety of
interdisciplinary courses and programs.
Dossiers should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, sample course
evaluations (if available), graduate school transcript, and at least three
letters of recommendation. Samples of written work may be requested at a
later date. Dossiers are to be sent to:
Dr. Darice Birge, Chair
Dept. of Classical Studies
Crown Center 575
Loyola University Chicago
6525 N. Sheridan Rd.
Chicago, IL 60626

Applicants who submit dossiers by December 15, 1997 will be considered for
interviews at the APA/AIA meeting. The final deadline for applications is
January 9, 1998.
Loyola University Chicago is a Jesuit Catholic institution and an equal
opportunity/affirmative action employer.
