The short version regarding Penthesileia's aid to Troy:

Previously, she had accidentally speared and killed her sister, Queen
Hippolyte, during a stag hunt. After then ascending to her new throne,
the Furies dogged Penthesileia for her sister's death; on top of that,
many of her new subjects deeply believed Hippolyte's death was no
accident. Penthesileia surveyed her options, and purchased a one-way
ticket to Troy. Her death would satisfy the Furies (since their
purpose was to have relatives of the slain avenge deaths of family
members), mend old wounds between Troy and the Amazons, quell those
among her subjects who were out for her blood thus bringing peace back
to her nation, and give herself a fitting warrior's death. While there,
she figured she may as well suffer the Greeks a powerful blow and take
their dear Achilles with her. Twelve of her greatest warriors
accompanied her (most likely, the only 12 who remained loyal to her),
and they took a substantial amount of Greeks with them, too. Several
accounts abound of the events pertaining to the battle, but the end
result was that they all died, as did Penthesileia, at the hands of
Achilles. She was given the highest burial honors during a dramatic
evening ceremony, and put to rest at Troy near the tomb of Laomedon.

The stuff of greatest tragedies.
