Short Description:

The Associate Editor is directly involved in the editing and production of
the American Journal of Archaeology (AJA) and of the Archaeological
Institute of America (AIA) Monograph Series, reports directly to the
Editor-in-Chief of the AJA and the Executive Director of the AIA.

The Associate Editor also works closely with
the Managing Editor in Boston at the headquarters of the AIA.
Responsibilities include copyediting the contents of each of the four
fascicles of the AJA, and corresponding with authors on all matters relating
to the preparation of manuscripts for publication.

Additionally, the Associate Editor will assist in the development and
implementation of electronic copyediting, and will work closely with the
Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor in implementing electronic versions
(PDF and HTML/SGML) versions of the Journal.

Finally, the Associate Editor will be responsible for liaising with the
AIA Monographs Committee on all editorial matters relating to the
submission, editing, and publication of manuscripts. This includes serving
as liaison between the authors, the Monographs Committee, the
Vice-President for Publications, the AIA Executive Director, and the
publisher.

Required Experience:

Minimum 2 years experience copyediting and proofing academic writing in a
professional setting (journal, commercial publisher, university press).
Excellent writing and editing skills.

Reading proficiency in one or more foreign and/or ancient languages is
necessary.

Advanced degree in archaeology, ancient history, ancient art, or a related
field is desirable.

Knowledge of Microsoft Word is essential; familiarity with desktop
publishing software (PageMaker, Quark, InDesign) and graphics programs
(Photoshop, Illustrator) is desirable. Completion of a copyediting test is
required.

Salary/Hours: Competitive/35 hours/week.
