The Suda On Line (SOL) presents this week's edition of Suda Classics - a
weekly message featuring the best of recent additions to the Suda On Line
database of translations from the Suda. For this second week, we'll be
featuring an extract from Phiroze Vasunia's annotated translation of Suda
lemma Eta 536 Adler, "Herodotus." Use this url to look up the full
translation entry in the Suda On Line database (there should be no spaces):

<extract>
Herodotus, Eta 536

Herodotus, son of Lyxus and Dryo, of Halicarnassus, from an illustrious
family, who had a brother Theodorus. He migrated to Samos because of
Lygdamis, who was the third tyrant of Halicarnassus after Artemisia:
Pisindelis was the son of Artemisia, and Lygdamis the son of Pisindelis.[1]
In Samos he practised the Ionian dialect and wrote a history in nine books,
beginning with Cyrus the Persian and Candaules the king of the Lydians. He
went back to Halicarnassus and drove out the tyrant; but later, when he saw
that the citizens were jealous of him, he went of his own will to Thurii,
which was colonized by the Athenians, and after he died there, was buried in
the agora.[2] But some say that he died in Pella. His Books are inscribed to
the Muses.

After you've taken a look at the full entry, please feel free to forward any
comments to the SOL Managing Committee at the address below. Perhaps you'd
like to volunteer your services as an editor (vetting completed entries like
the above for possible improvements) or translator - another important entry
we'd like to see translated soon is that for the Emperor Hadrian (Alpha
527). If you're interested in volunteering as either a translator or an
editor, please register at the SOL website, http://www.stoa.org/sol/.

[Ok, I made this promise last week, but this time I mean it: Future mailings
of Suda Classics will be made on Sunday evenings after 8:00 pm EST. With
next week's mailing, we will provide you with a web address where you'll be
able to find previous weeks' Suda Classics. They are also archived by the
Suda list and by a few other mailing lists.] If you'd like to receive these
messages directly to your mailbox, please sign up for the Suda mailing list
at http://lsv.uky.edu/cgi-bin/wa.exe?SUBED1=suda&A=1 ; if you'd like to
suggest a future Suda Classic feature translation, please contact the SOL
Managing Committee at the address below.
