Well, AMIA members, Home Movie Day is now just ten days away! If you haven't been keeping pace with all the exciting developments listed on the Home Movie Day web site (www.homemovieday.com), here's a taste...
--We now have local coordinators and events occurring in two dozen cities across the U.S., Mexico, Canada, and Japan! Individual venues and coordinators are listed on the web site.
--San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson have both declared 8/16 to be an official Home Movie Day in their jurisdictions! You can read Governor Richardson's very nice proclamation on our website at www.homemovieday.com...
--Watch local and national media outlets next week for major stories about Home Movie Day...we're expecting coverage on NPR's "All Things Considered" on the 12th or 13th, not to mention print stories and local television coverage everywhere there's a Home Movie Day event.
--We STRONGLY suggest volunteering to help out at your nearest venue. You can help appraise family films that are brought in, lend clean/well-maintained equipment for the day, or chip in a few bucks for snacks, promotional materials, or small-gauge sundries. You might meet someone whose films would be perfect for your institution's collection, or you might help someone view footage of a pet, relative, or family home that's no longer with us. Contact your local coordinator to find out how you can lend a hand. This experience will be rewarding!!
--As a joint project of the AMIA Small Gauge/Amateur Film and Regional A/V Archives groups, donations can be made through AMIA to help defray Home Movie Day costs like postage, promotional materials, supplies, and other expenses. Every little bit helps, and sponsoring Home Movie Day is a great way for labs, storage facilities, and other businesses to raise their profile among a public newly aware of film's storage and preservation needs.
--If you somehow manage to miss 8/16 and the associated media frenzy entirely, you can still hear all about it at the Vancouver conference. Check the conference schedule online at www.amianet.org and plan to attend the Home Movie Day session!
Hip hip hooray for Home Movie Day!
